League Satisfaction Survey

Posted: 03/26/2002 Updated: 04/23/2002

PLEASE! In order to better evaluate the 2001-02 season and to adequately plan for next year, the BTHL Board asks that all members (Association officers, coaches, managers, referees, parents, players) complete a survey. The form will only be available online this year, there will be no mailing. The results can also be viewed online.

One question involves a potential change to next years' tournament format. Before completing the survey please review the proposed change:

  1. We propose the elimination of the 2-tier format. (Used only at the "A" level this year).
  2. We will replace our consolation games with a consolation bracket for 1st round losers.

Advantages as we see them would include:
    1. Every team will have an opportunity to play for the championship. (This will be of most benefit to those teams that don't start to play well until late in the season).
    2. The weaker teams will place themselves in a "more competitive bracket" by losing their first game.
    3. All games played will have purpose, there are no consolation games.
Samples of how some of our brackets would have appeared under the proposed format can be viewed by clicking below.

Dayton Gems AAA Program Expands

The Dayton Gems AAA Hockey Club has recently been accepted as a member of the Mid-American AAA Tier I Hockey League. This 10 team league features top AAA programs from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana.

The Gems will be the exclusive provider of AAA Hockey in the central Ohio, southern Ohio and northern Kentucky markets. Tryouts will be open to ALL players from any market, particularly top select players desiring to participate at the highest level of youth amateur hockey. Next season (2002-2003), the Gems will offer AAA birth year teams at the following levels:

The Dayton Gems AAA Tryout Camp will be held at Sportstown Skating Center, Dayton, Ohio, from May 2-5, 2002. Players interested in attending this open tryout should contact Jeff Walker, Director of AAA Operations. The organization hotline phone is 937-885-GEM4.

The Gems have assembled an exceptional AAA Coaching Staff, including 5 former professional players and 6 former Division I NCAA players. All teams will receive professional coaching instruction on and off the ice throughout the entire season. All AAA teams will be provided a minimum of a 2 practice to 1 game ratio for the season. Travel weekends will be limited to a maximum of 10 for the season.

The Mid-American AAA Tier I Hockey League is hosting their 1st Annual tournament in Chicago July 12-14, 2002. All league members, including the Gems teams will be required to participate.

The Gems will select additional coaches for team assistant coaches after the tryout process is completed. Any person interested in a Gems AAA Coaching position should contact Jeff Walker as soon as possible.

The Gems feel their location is perfectly located to be central for the major markets like Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, eastern Indiana and possibly as far north as Findlay for this level of play. They fully expect their teams to be made up of players from all over this region.

Subject: olympic stats

FYI - I've attached some of the puck possession observation project data from the last day of the Olympics. The group observed every game played at the Olympics with the world's best players. Remember, these stats include a sixty minute game including power play and penalty killing ice time. Obviously, most youth games are shorter than sixty minutes, therefore, the stats would probably be even more concerning.

Some of the significant average results, for the world's best players, in a 60 minute hockey game include:

  • 18.46 minutes of ice time
  • 1:07 of puck possession time
  • 21 passes received
  • 23 passes attempted
  • 4 shots taken
  • 44 puck touches

I think we can safely say that games are not the environment to develop skills in our youth players. Obviously, in practice, players will get a lot more ice time; will carry a puck a lot longer than one minute; can give and receive a lot more passes; and will take a lot more shots. Hopefully, you can share this information with your hockey community to stress the importance of increased practice time instead of playing more games.

The complete statistics of this observation project can be found in the coaches section on the USA Hockey web site at www.usahockey.com. In addition, we plan to complete a similar study at our youth nationals in Colorado Springs in early April.

Your help with spreading the word about skill development and appropriate practice to game ratio is greatly appreciated and will result in long term positive results for hockey in the United States.

Best Regards,
Kevin McLaughlin and Mark Tabrum

Ohio 3 on 3 Tournament

Letter from Todd Stallsworth, Tournament Director

Dear BTHL Teams

The 4th Annual Ohio 3 on 3 Tournament is nearing, and we'd like you to participate. The tournament consists of mite age through midget age players each year. The tournament has grown each year due to the increasing interest in 3 on 3 hockey. It is scheduled on the weekend of May 17-19, 2002 in Columbus, Ohio at the OSU Ice Rink. Teams consist of 4 players and 1 goalie or 5 players and 1 goalie, and for only $60/participant--it's quite a bargain. Each team is guaranteed at least 3 games (usually more depending on number of teams), a complimentary 3 on 3 jersey, and the finalists receive an individual trophy as well as a team trophy. I hope that you look into this incredible experience and come to Ohio's original youth 3 on 3 tournament in Columbus!

For more information, check out our website at:

See you on the ice,

A/AA Policy for Next Year

In order that teams may start to plan the formation of teams for next season we wish to announce that the Board intends to continue with our policy of allowing 6 "2nd year" players on "A" teams. In addition, we will also continue to grant exceptions on a case by case basis. While the policy remains the same, keep in mind that our trend has been to get stricter in the approval process for "exception" teams. Please consider this while making your team selections.

Game Stats

Please keep the following points in mind when reporting games stats:
  1. If you leave ALL the stats blank for a given team, the system will not update or change the previously reported stats in any way.
  2. If you report a single stat (such as goalie saves), the system will erase all previously reported stats and all that will remain is the stat you reported. If your intention was to simply ADD a stat, you need to click on the button labeled "Click here to read previously reported stats" BEFORE entering anything new. Then add/correct the stat and click "Post Results".
  3. If you're reporting stats for just your team and not the opposing team, PLEASE fill in the game score at the top of the form. The system will look at individual stats to calculate a game score, but the score for your opponent will be ZERO if you don't report something. It just creates extra work going back and correcting scores.

** League Standings Tie Breaker **

Posted: 01/30/2002

The following tie breaker will be used in the case of a tie in points for regular season standings (same as last 3 years):

  1. Results of Head-to-head series between tied teams.
  2. Goal differential (Goals For minus Goals Against) in games between tied teams.
  3. Goals Against in games between tied teams.
  4. Goal differential in all league games.
  5. Goals Against in all league games.
  6. If still tied then declare co-champions. (Coin flip will be used for tournament seeding).

Tournament Fee

The BTHL Board is pleased to announce that there will be no additional fees due for the upcoming Year-end Tournament. The $300 included with the team registration fee and the budget surpluses of prior seasons have combined to put us in this favorable position. In addition (and as a result), there will be NO Tournament Application Form this year. Please watch this website for further announcements.

Browser Incompatibility

I've received a couple of reports regarding problems with our new website. It appears that older versions of Netscape (4.7 in particular) will not bring up the menu in the frame to the left. To my knowledge all versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer work just fine and Netscape 6.0 (or above) will work with everything except Rosters and Scoresheets (same as before).

If you're using an old browser, please upgrade. If you're experiencing problems with any Microsoft browsers or a current Netscape browser, please let me know and I'll dig a little further.

Thanks for your help and sorry for the inconvenience!

Protest Policy

Please be advised that our Protest Policy is covered in our Rules & Regulations.

Two key points to keep in mind when considering a protest are:

  1. All game protests must be made in writing to the Conduct Committee within 72 hours of game completion.
  2. A $25 $100 fee must accompany the protest. Should the protest be upheld the $25 $100 fee will be refunded. Please note that the protest fee was changed at the last Board Meeting. Meeting Minutes will be posted just as soon as they are completed.

Scoresheet Procedure

Scoresheets are to be mailed to the BTHL Scheduler, Arthur Burghes (104 Brevoort Rd, Columbus, OH 43214), on a weekly basis. If there are game misconducts, please fax them ASAP to 630/604-0431. We do several things with the scoresheets:

  1. Verify the accuracy of the reported score
  2. Check for any unreported game suspensions
  3. Spot check for suspensions served.
As I'm sure you can appreciate, this can be a time consuming process and we ask that you help us out by submitting your scoresheets in a timely manner.

Minor Bug

When attempting to post game results some of you may see an error pop-up. It occurs as your browser is loading the "Password Entry" screen after clicking on "Post Results". To deal with it simply click "OK" on the error message, click on the "Back" button of your browser and then click "Post Results" again. The page should load without error the second time in.

Let me know if you have any other problems.

Game Results

If you've submitted your non-league schedule to be posted on this website please follow through by promptly reporting those results, win or lose. Also, we encourage you to help us out (especially in the case of non-league games) by using the online reporting system. Note that we do not want scoresheets for non-league games unless there is a game misconduct given that must be served during a league game.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Game Reporting Tips

For those of you using (or intending to use) the online game reporting system, thank you! In the long run it will save us all some time and if you're reporting individual scoring statistics it'll add something of interest to the league. What I'm going to do is list some instructions and misc pointers to make things easier and more accurate.

  1. First of all, you'll need Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or above. Netscape unfortunately does not support the necessary "data binding" feature used in the system.
  2. For those of you that have not used it, simply pull up your team schedule and click on the "Game#" you wish to report (or just view). What you should see is a form titled "BTHL Scoresheet Game #nnn". What you're looking at is previously reported game stats. If you'd like to submit (or correct) the stats, click on the [Post Results] button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. The "Password Entry" screen will be displayed at this point.
    1. If you have previously received a password and entered it from this computer; you will see your user name and password already keyed in, you simply click on the [Enter] button.
    2. If you have previously received a password but have NOT entered it from this computer -or- if you have "cookies" disabled; you need to manually key in your user name and password before entering.
    3. If you have NOT previously received a password and no one else from your team has either, you will be automatically directed into a "Password Request" form. Fill it out and submit it, you will instantly be given access to post your game scores (if cookies are enabled).
    4. If you have NOT previously received a password but someone else from your team has, you will have to click on the link (small print below the [Enter] button) to the Password Request form, fill it out, submit it and wait for me to manually add your name to the "approved" list.
  4. The "BTHL Game Posting" form should now be displayed. Note that individual scoring statistics are optional. You can simply enter the game score at the top of the form and click the [Post Results] button, you're done that quick.
  5. If you're going to report individual statistics I suggest you get in the habit of using your [Tab] key to advance from field to field. Pressing [Enter] will not advance through the form as you might expect and I think you'll find the [Tab] key much easier than navigating with your mouse.
  6. If you're making a correction to a previously submitted game, give your browser a few seconds to load the form (this is important) and then click the button at the top labeled [Click here to read previously reported stats]. This will fill all the boxes with previously submitted Goals, Assists, Penalties, Saves and Suspensions. Much easier and more accurate than entering them all from scratch.
  7. You can fill in the stats for both teams or just your own, your choice. For your information:
    1. The system will do some minor error checking on the number of goals. If the number of individual goals reported is higher than the team score, the system will automatically bump up the team score to match that total. This may seem to be an odd way to handle the error, but I can assure you I'll hear from the opposing team if the score is too high. I can't say the same about inflated stats.
    2. There are 2 fields for penalties, qty and time. Just enter whole numbers for the time, don't bother with the "seconds". And as a reminder, a player receiving a "2 and 10" has received 2 penalties and the correct way to report it would be as a qty of "2" and time of "12". A "5 and Game" would be reported as a qty of "2" and time of "15". For statistics purposes a game misconduct is counted as 10 minutes.
    3. If only 1 goaltender has played you can simply enter the number of saves. The system will use the opponents number of goals scored to calculate the "Save%".
    4. If more that 1 goaltender has played (and only if), use the "Goals" field to report the number of goals given up by each. Otherwise there is no way to calculate an accurate "Save%". If a goaltender actually does score a goal please send me an email and I'll take care of it manually.
  8. Note that this system does not update the webpage automatically when you submit scores. What happens is that a specially formatted email is sent and the webpage will be updated only after I've received and processed it.
  9. Stats can be reported for non-league games and will be available for viewing, but please note that they will not included in the summarized totals.
  10. You can view stats for the entire league or each individual age group by bringing up the list of Rosters and clicking on "Master for All Age Groups" or each of the age group labels ("Mite", "Squirt", etc). Once the form has completely loaded (may take from a couple to as much as 30 seconds depending on your connection speed) you can sort the list by clicking on any of the underlined column headings.

I'll add tips and instructions as questions come up during the season.

Schedules are Posted

Managers, your job is now to confirm the accuracy of these online schedules. Please send me an email either confirming the accuracy or listing the corrections. PLEASE, when corresponding with me, tell me which team (City, Age, Level) you represent and use game#s. It's sometimes hard for me to dig that information up. Also, please submit your rosters. We will eventually require a copy of the official USA Hockey stamped copy but until you receive that please provide us with a list of players including their birth dates.

Application Deadline has Passed, Team List is Final

Our deadline for "on-time" applications was Saturday, September 1st. If your application was not postmarked by that day then you must pay a late fee of $50/team. Any applications not on hand as of now will not be accepted. There will be a conference call on Tuesday evening to consider teams with more than 6 "2nd-year" players petitioning to participate in our "A" division. For those of you interested, the team list has petitioning teams flagged. Note that divisions can not be finalized until after that meeting.

Also, please remember to submit your rosters. If your team has applied for the "A" division you should have given us a player list with birth dates at a minimum. (Official rosters are due for all teams before the first league game). Please check this website to verify receipt of your application and roster. Everything received is posted within 1 day of receipt. If it's not posted, I don't have it.

Team Application Form

I've been receiving a few requests lately for a Team Application Form. Apparently I've not made the link obvious enough (at the top of this page directly under the words "Bulletin Board"). It's been there for the last few years so I've taken for granted everyone knew about it. At any rate, here's another link.
