- How would you rate the overall competition within the division during regular season play?
9-Excellent (well balanced), 19-Good (Overall good competition) , 8-OK (Some good/some not) , 6-Fair (Many uncompetive games) , 1-Poor (teams poorly matched)
- Additional comments:
- 4 teams in a division is too few.
- disappointed in change making league game the second one and the first being exhibition.
- I think the competition was somewhat lopsided. Cause: Teams with too many players playing up, too many second year players and undefeated teams from last year. If a team has the same players from last year and was undefeated or had a season where there were one or two losses, they should move up a bracket to a AA or AAA level. On the flip side, there should be more opportunity for rec leagues, especially in the older age groups. Every 15 year old who wants to play should not be on a travel team.
- The Bantan A Bluegrass was very competitive. Columbus started the season dominating most teams. By Christmas... Indy became the dominating force. By the end of the season, no team wanted to face Louisville in the tournament
- It was a good year for the Bluehawks!
- The top 3 teams in our division were extremely close as far as competition. There were a couple of teams who were not competative in this group
- Within Peewee AA, there seemed to be a wide disparity between the top teams and the bottom teams. Also, I would have preferred to have had one division of 11 teams rather than two divisions of five and six.
- The league was well run and the issues that arose were handled professionally and swiftly.

- Current date good.
- Other comments on Scheduling:
- make 2 games a trip insted of going back the next day
- Even though travel increases, the teams should play everyone in their age group and classification before the tournament. This year we had games against 5 teams in the league and didn't play the other six as part of the league.
- You should have a league scheduler for each age bracket. All teams should send the league scheduler their home ice times. The League scheduler should then "layout" the schedule prior to the scheduling meeting. The scheduling meeting then could be used to make any adjustments. This would save a lot of time at the meeting and should make it a little more equitable for all teams. I'm the league scheduler for the Hooiser High School Hockey Association. We have 12 Central Indiana teams. This seems to work out very well.
- Its going to be a good year!
- Require two games per scheduled day...the drives are too long to play just one game, then have to drive back some other day to play again..REQUIRE two games
- i think with the travel involved, its important to play 2 games each visit, it should be a league rule. Why play one game and require another to fulfill league obligations? schedule 2!
- We as a group of parents loved the double header concept!!!
- I thought for the most part the scheduling went well. I didn't hear about any major problems with allowing the teams to schedule the games themselves.
- No real problems except people who expect us to travel 3 hours for a 7am game... Maybe some guidelines on acceptable times?
- Overall, pretty good. I didn't enjoy having a 6:00 am game in Evansville, but I know that some associations have difficulties apportioning out the available ice times.
- I'd like to get the league games scheduled earlier so I have more time to fill in the gaps
- Every Association should send a representitive from each team to schedule there own games. Waiting on one person to schedule everyone in their association waste to much time.
- The room should be much bigger with round tables.
- Age groups/divisions:
- Our intent is to maintain our current system of allowing 6 "2nd year" players to roster with "A" teams for next year. We also intend to grant exceptions to that rule in situations where there is a limited pool of participants or if the team is 2nd or 3rd in line to select players. How would you describe your position on this rule? 9-Strongly in favor, 12-Moderately in favor , 13-Don't have strong feelings , 6-Moderately Opposed , 3-Strongly Opposed
- Please provide us with your opinion, especially if you have strong feelings one way or another.
- I'm a 2 year pewee and i had no travel experience so that rule didn't apply to us
- Six second year players seems to be working. Make exceptions hard to get. Watch out for teams that sandbag.
- One bracket is best. We came from an area where there were 14 teams in the finals. The seeding was done by the league, and there were often surprises. It gives the teams that start off slow incentive to continue to improve. Hold the tournament in a more central location. Also, the tournament shouldn't be held in the same place year after year. This gives the home team unfair advantage repeatedly.
- Allowing more than 6 could lead to a team having an unfair advantage over those teams that have younger players. The intent should be to have competitive games and not allow a team to "load up" just for the intent of winning.
- Butler County was allowed to Play Squirt A for Two season under this 6-man rule and destroyed everyone in the division. They were clearly AA and claimed they didn't have the talent nor the number of players. But yet they went to the Finals in the year you made them play up. The same thing happended this year with the Cyclones as they went to 4 organizations and pulled players to form a AA team which was OK, but then formed two additional A teams right at the threshold of the 6-man rule and crushed everyone again with one of those teams. They should have had an addtional AA. It seems to me that everyone in South West Ohio knows what's going on but has let it happen 3 years in a row between two organizations 30 minutes apart. You may consider going Major/Minor and break AA/A divisions that way. You had to split divisions for A at the tournament to make it fair.
- Track the historical record of those teams/players in previous years/levels that are requesting "exceptions" to determine where they will be most cocmpetitive.
- In the past (before the new age change), I felt this was a very good rule. The problem with it, was that your rulings were inconsistant. As far as this coming year, at least for the Midgets, it will be hard for teams in some associations to have enough players for strictly "birth year" players. If a team wants to compete outside of the buckeye league, they will need to take the best available players. For Midget A (minor), this will mean having 86' and 87' birth year players. In tournaments (Chicago, Michigan, etc.), you will be playing against more 86'players than 87' players. This is a tough decision for this upcoming year.
- Please next year listen to Athens when if they say that they would like to play "A" but have more than 6 second year players. Chances are if this is the case the board feels the team will perhaps not be competitive in the "AA" bracket. (take this year's Bantam "AA" team for example, Come on buckeye league!!)
- There needs to a firm # of 2nd year players. The Columbus Bluejackets in Pee-wee A had 9+ 2nd year palyers and were very strong. I could see if a team was very "weak" the previous year and could use the help. I do not believe this was the case on this team. I could see one or two 2nd year, but not the # they had.
- This rule helps the first year midgets get the feel of it and the team wont get blown away every game they play.
- teams splitting their second year players to the point where they have 2 "A" teams instead of 2 "AA" teams shouldn't be allowed. If it were a small organization, exceptions should be allowed.....but not for the biggest organization (total kids) in the league
- The same guy writes in every year and complains about Butler County, and this year, Cincinnati. Two Points : (1) the year Butler County moved up and played the tournament as AA they did it voluntarily, and as reward they got to play the Gems AA (#1 seed) at Dayton in a year that the tournament was in Cincy. (2) If you're gonna write in each year and whine, please volunteer to be on the committee that makes these decisions, I believe there is a place to do so somewhere on this form.
- I think we were ok with the situation at the pee wee A level.. We did play a lot of much bigger teams who had 10-12 2nd year players on it. I would hope next year we would be able to have 8 second year players and compete at A level. Our teams are the third teams picked, as we pick our AA and A teams first to compete in Little Ceasars league in Detroit. Then we picked team for Buckeye.
- I would hate to see you drop the option of petitioning to play A as opposed to playing AA. There are teams out there who would not be competative at the AA level for many reasons.
- Smaller programs do not necessarily have AA programs, even if kids are 2nd year. IT's a matter of skill/ability, not age.
- Would like to see smaller Orgs. given more latitude to move to A level. Maybe have a set of mini round robins in Sept.so teams can see where they fit in better and then do scheduling.
- If a limited pool, and they have more than 6 2nd year players, they need to play AA and not be given an option.
- I believe that Associations which have smaller player pools of which to derive teams, should be allowed to compete at a lower level or have a two tiered system where larger associations and smaller associations can compete on an equal level.
- I would support the idea of having a preliminary weekend of games in early September/late August in a central location for those teams petitioning to play down to help ensure that all teams are properly placed.
- I think that 6 2nd year players may be to low. Many times teams from smaller markets have 6-8 2nd year players and 6-8 1st year players who then have to compete with teams that are all 2nd year players
- 6 should be dropped to 4
- Should have a preseason schedule that would help determine the level of teams. Then scheduling meeting would be later.
- I think it's great to allow teams waivers. Findlay PeeWee A had over 6 second year players, but many of them had not really played travel hockey. These kids had the desire, but not a lot of "hockey" sense. If you had made them play AA, they would have been killed every game and lost hope. This is all about having fun and improving the kids.
- We have a tradition of seperating our given divisions geographically when we reach a total of 10-12 teams. Would you like to see that break point go: 9-Higher, 32-Unchanged , 2-Lower
- Tournament:
- How would you rate the end of season Tournament? 5-Excellent, 15-Good , 10-OK , 7-Fair , 6-Poor
- Plans are already underway for next year's tournament. One possible change being considered is the replacement of consolation games with a consolation bracket for 1st round losers. (Please refer to sample brackets linked from "News" section on our website) Would you be in favor of this change? 33-Yes, 3-No , 7-Not sure
- Consideration is being given to the addition of a "Bronze Medal" game for the two losers in the Semi-Final games. If your team were in that position would you want to participate in such a game? 31-Yes, 7-No , 5-Not sure
- Plans for the Tournament were discussed at the September Scheduling Meeting and were discussed at subsequent BTHL Board meetings. Updates were posted on the BTHL Web page with brackets, game times, hotel information, fees, etc.
- Did you check the Web page for updates? 38-Yes, 3-No , 2-No answer
- Do you think you were sufficiently kept informed about the tournament? 37-Yes, 4-No , 2-No answer
- Other comments on the tournament:
- Louisville was a disaster. Ice surface was awful, worst we saw anywhere all season by far. Tournament deserved better. There are so many other superior facilities in other cities around the league.
- Arena was poorly kept
- The bracketing this year pitted the top three teams in each division against each other to get to the finals. It should have been #1 team in league got a bye. Number 2 team played #11, #3 vs #10, #4 vs #9, etc. In order for our team to make it to the finals we played the 2nd place team in one division, then the first place team in our division and then the first place team in the other division. We were the number 3 seed.
- There needs to be a more realistic assessment of actual Game starting times. When the possibility exists for overtime and shoot-outs--factor it in. Don't assume otherwise and create a logjam of people, smelly players and equipment in spaces ill-equipped for the volume.
- was not prepared to supply time keepers and score keepers.
- Refs were not the greatest. What is wrong with the refing system here. We moved from a different state, and I can tell you that the refs in this area are extremely biased, overall. They don't call hits to the head that occur right in front of them, and then will call panalties for touching the goalie before the whistle is blown. My sons have played in nine other states, and the refing here is the very worst we've ever seen. Pay attention to this, because there are a lot of people who see this as a huge problem.
- Louisville's a hole and the officiating was beyond belief. And I was there for 2 weekends and it never changed. Move it back to Cincy/Dayton where it belongs
- I like the proposed format. Two games on one day, did not feel like a tournament.
- Please, change the tournament format next year if there is a tie at the end of regulation!!! I mean, when you have a five man shootout at the end of regulation FIRST, sure it may cut down SOME time, however it takes the WHOLE TEAM ASPECT out of hockey and focuses on individual skills. Both teams played as TEAMS to get where they are in the game and so they should WIN OR LOSE as a TEAM, not as a player making the winning shot. Shootouts should be held as a LAST resort. (chances are in a 5 minute sudden death overtime you will have a winner anyway!) Also, the "No protest" policy needs to be changed, especially if a team is found in DIRECT VIOLATION of roster rules, as a certain midget team was found at the tournament. Coaches these days will lie to get anything they think will help them win, and this presents an unfair advantage when you have players who are not even registered for USA hockey playing.
- Lvl Bantam A finished with 5th best record. Received the 6th seed... had beaten every team in the league at least once. Finished the regular season very strong. Won the lower bracket but never had a chance to play for the championship. The players were very disappointed
- The tournament was organized very well.
- Was unclear how the determination was made which third place Bantam team to send "up" to the top tier and which one to send "down" to the bottom tier
- The web site crashed the week before the tournamen...the one week of the season that everybody needed it
- until the site became inaccessable the week of the tourney
- single elimination is a long way to come and lose. Losers bracket may help.
- Move the site occasionally -- Louisville is NOT centrally located relative to most BTHL teams.
- Consolation games can also be a problem since they don't mean anything, especially at the older age groups.
- Unrostered plyers were allowed from the Dayton Bluehawks AA team. Don't understand why this is allowed. Tournament rules were not updated (or at least said to be current).
- I understand Louisville was significantly cheaper than any other alternative and the officials were from all over, not just Louisville. I appreciate the hours put into the tournament by the tournament director and the volunteers in Louisville. They all worked for free and I appreciate their efforts. However, the facility was poor. It was not clean and the scoreboard failed to work during the first two games one evening. I also agree that the tournament should be in a more centralized location, as long as it cost competitive. I am ready for the tournament to move somewhere else, though.
- I think the teams from the organization hosting the tournament should be allowed to participate for free. Louisville had many volunteers and kept things running smoothly. They got nothing for their efforts.
- Change location to a more centralized city with better ice.
- Other than the Lower bracket system, the tourny was well run and games were well officiated.
- BTHL Home Page:
- How would you rate it? 20-Excellent, 17-Good , 4-OK , 2-Fair
- What have you liked about it?
- The information and updates (schedules, standings, and rink location information)
- updated regularly
- It is kept current and is very informative.
- Contact email addresses are extremely helpful. Need more recent news, sometimes there were no changes for weeks.
- there's alot of info posted once you know about the site. it is very informative
- easy to locate information.
- Up to date scores and records
- Team info, schedule, game scores and standings.
- It is very informative
- It is very up to date with scores and standings
- I thought the Web Master did a great job of updating the site. Game results were usually posted within 24 hrs.
- How you keep rankings up to date, and rosters also the schedules and the suspensions.
- good source of info
- excellent source of information....outstanding job
- its all great...layout...info....all of it
- very current and all the information was always there!!
- Ease of use; loaded with information regarding standings, rosters, stats, feedback through the live forum,& game schedules
- I liked how frequently it was updated.
- Up to date information, Stats, Standings
- Relatively upto date.
- most teams do an excellent job of maintaining scores. I appreciate the amount of work that Len puts into it to list schedules, etc.
- kept me up to date and informed-good info on directions ?
- up-to-date information
- Good updated information
- Easy of movement and availability of information
- It seems that the site is updated frequently.
- Schedules, rosters, posting results and contacts
- Standings, maps to rinks.
- What could be improved?
- Better reporting of game stats.
- Your live forum was neither. If you are going to have it, suppport it. If not, discard.
- Maybe a better messege board. It would need to be supervised and edited. Some of the messege boards out there are really viscious, especially the CSHL.
- Location for some of the HS tournament games was incorrect. Some of the results of the Louisville tournament games were incorrect, but were corrected immediately when the webmaster was notified.
- teams need to report game resjults quicker. would also like to see all teams report score sheets with individual player stats.
- All teams should report game results within 72 hrs. If games are canceled, the web site should be notified. One team had already finished regular season play and another team was showing 10 games to play on the first of February.
- Can't think of anything right now.
- Update game results more often. This is fault of specific organizations, not the web site administrator Also, used to work well under netscape, no longer works at all since the site was moved
- quicker updates, what happened to the minutes from the meetings?
- more info from the board meetings....
- Are the stats needed? are they accurate?
- All teams should (be required to?)update their stats.
- "Forum" is useless - stats are also unless everyone uses them.
- Updating the games stat sheets sooner. I do not know why this does not happen. Managers? Webmaster?
- I would like to see league game statistics as mandatory. I would also like to see non-league game scores listed.
- Nothing
- Nothing
- Keeping the rosters and players numbers up to date for posting scores.
- More accuracy on player statisitics (I'm sure this isn't so much a website issue as accuracy in keeping/reporting stats). I think it would create more interest.
- Other comments:
- Excellant links
- You should market this program. It would sell!
- Post more USA Hockey Tournaments on the web site. We had a really hard time trying to find out of town tournaments. We only played in three... Nashville, Cleveland and of course, Silver Stick.
- Need to get meeting minutes onto site quicker
- Keep up the good work!!
- I think the website was fantastic! Except for one small block of time, the website was available and updated in a timely manner. It looks like the "live forum" might need to go. I'm not sure it was used constructfully.
- Not all of us use "Microsoft" products -- make the site vendor neutral - If you don't know how, ask for help.
- This is as good a web site as I have seen from any other league.
- Much better site than Little Caesar's!
- There was no consistent reporting of game results. Some people were good at entering everything, some rarely entered anything.
- BTHL Administration:
- We've eliminated most mailings this year. Is the website sufficient to keep you informed with what's going on in the BTHL? 35-Yes, 2-No , 5-Not sure , 1-No response
- Have you seen/read the minutes of the BTHL Board Meetings? 26-Yes, 17-No
- Have you seen/read the BTHL Rules & Regulations? 38-Yes, 5-No
- Woud you be in favor of making submission of game stats mandatory? (goals, assists, saves, penalties) 29-Yes, 7-No , 7-Maybe
- Other comments regarding communication:
- Need the teams to submit all of their games, both league and non league to the league. That way we can track all suspensions better
- After reading suspensions and being involved in the misconduct administration process, I offer this advice. The BTHL Conduct Committee needs to review USA Hockey bylaws and follow there administrative process regarding suspensions. USA Hockey sets out a fair procedural process, that this committee does not seem to be following. In the future, the committee should review this process and follow it to the letter. It appears this committee is "flying by the seat of their pants". I would be more than happy to discuss this further if necessary.
- Are the board meetings minutes on the website? I was very dissapointed with the way BTHL handled the Bluehawks squirt parent issue. You severely penalized a parent and apologized to a coach who should not have been coaching, due to his repeated abusive behavior to his players and other teams' players. Thank goodness Indy Ice had the sense to pull him as a coach after, yet another fiasco. You really blew that one guys. It appeared that no one from the board looked into any of the allegations against the coach, you just assumed that the bluehawks team parents were biased. I hope that guy is barred from coaching in this league forever. You should have gotten a clue from the fact that the Indy Racers would not play that team, even if it meant forfeiting a championship game.
- Penalties that involve suspension or Majors would be good
- Most teams do not want to post their stats because they are afraid it will draw attention to thier key players.
- league game stats should be submitted
- cant be any easier!!
- Is there a place where we can find the minutes online?
- The stats and standings reports need to be made mandatory, and be completed within 3-4 days of the games.
- Some associations have a "broadcast" e-mail system to communicate with all members
- please ensure that the league meeting minutes are posted promptly
- Mandatory stats would be burdensome for managers. Lets just keep track of wins and losses and leave the stats out of it.
- Results must be more timely and player names must match scoresheets
- Int addition to the rink maps, which are helpful, perhaps each team or local association could also post a listing of nearby hotels, restaurants, etc.
- Volunteers:
- We would like to add "Level Directors" to help enforce Roster compliance and resolve scheduling issues during the season. With enough volunteers we hope to have seperate individuals responsible for each age group and possibly each division. Would you be willing to volunteer for such a position? 6-Yes, 19-No , 18-Maybe
- Returning officers for the 2002-03 season are filling most board positions. However, please indicate if you might be interested in filling a board position, volunteers will not be turned away. Committees are always in need. 3-Level Director , 15-Maybe, contact me at a later date , 25-Not interested
- If interested please provide a phone# or some other way to contact you:

- The BTHL is run solely with volunteers from member organizations. In some cases, board members don't have players in the league. Do you have any suggestions on how the BTHL can better identify volunteers for board positions and committees?
- How do you recruit board members? Where we came from, all members voted on board positions. Couldn't you give ballots out at the end of the year, one per family. Or have email addresses confirmed and do an online election for a period of a couple weeks.
- Send Info to each Association President and ask them to distribute at board meeting, to the travel coaches and post at their rinks.
- A handout with league info, volunteer opportunites, and what the volunteers do, given to players (for their parents) when they check in at the tournament. (not much help for this year)
- Call for volunteers during the scheduling meeting, or just after - while the people are there.
- This survey should be a good start.
- Any general / other comments:
- In Dayton The Officals favored greatly the home team with unbeliveable unfair calls.
- Good league. Good competition. More communication needs to be disseminated (if and when possible)to the masses via the website or other means. I assume that many of these team organizations are somewhat similar in their VERY POLITICAL nature. For this reason, it should not be assumed that communication directed toward an organization or team is heard or understood by the parents and players. Any progress in this area would be welcomed.
- This was our first year in the league. We all felt it was a good experience and look forward to next year!
- What the possibility of holding a few "BTHL Invitational Tournaments"? Some possible dates would be 1)Season opener... late October. 2) Thanksgiving weekend... warm-up for Silver Stick 3) Christmas Break Send an invitation to all MId Am / Midwest organizations. There are plenty of BTHL organization asking to hold the year end tournamnet... why not ask them to host one of these others.
- excellent league....well run
- I think next years classifications will decide if Louisville travel teams play in thTke Buckeye. their is a lot of concern about group changes. Example, we have 4 returning players from peewee A and none from peewee AA, but we have 5 squirt players moving up, by age they will be 2nd year peewee's. How will this be handled?
- I am quite impressed with the Buckeye League. Very orderly and professional. We as an organization have recently voted to add a total of three teams next year to Buckeye. We need to work out details here, but I am sure you will hear from our board on the matter. Hats off to the entire Buckeye Board for a job well done!!
- Overall, I thought the league ran very well. There was one issue of a site problem, (Hara Arena), but I thought for the most part - it was a good league. The problem at Hara is that the penalty boxes are open to the crowd behind them (no glass separating them from the crowd). From what I have heard, a couple of teams had their players jeered at, cussed at and generally abused by Dayton parents. This has got to stop. This site has got to prevent parents from being behind the boxes or not play at this site.
- The ref's in Dayton are really, really biased -- No ref should be an officer of one of the associations playing... There are THREE different associations there -- let him ref the OTHER associations games. They should at least TRY to look impartial - sitting with the team between games and chatting up the coaches is not impartial.
