The Checkers AAA Hockey Club is announcing try-outs for the 2003-04 season.  You can also find this announcement at the following locations:  www.indycheckers.com , www.iyha.com.  The fee for all try-outs will be $50.00 non-refundable.  All try-out fees are due at the first try-out.  Checks can be made out to Checkers AAA Hockey Organization.  An informational meeting will be held at the beginning of each birth year try-out. 

 

Major Midget

Head Coach – Jack Manard                           rihcoach@aol.com

Jack Manard has over 15 seasons of coaching experience with IYHA at all levels from Mite House to Midget Major AAA. He has coached several teams to multiple State and Tournament Championships and has coaching experience at the National Championship level.

 

Born in Detroit, he played in Detroit and Ontario until given an opportunity to play in the CCHA with Western Michigan University’s Club Team, prior to their acceptance into the league as a varsity sport. His time was cut very short due to a career ending injury.

 

Jack has been an instructor in IYHA`s I.P. Program, has directed several Summer Dryland Conditioning Programs, has coached AAA Summer Hockey for the past 4 years, is currently IYHA`s only USA Hockey Master Level Coach, scouts for Junior A and B Hockey and is one of the owners of The Forum at Fishers.  Jack is the current coach of the Checkers AAA Major Midget team.

Midget Minor [1987]

Born and raised in Toronto, Charlie played Major Junior A for the Windsor Spitfires, was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and by the Cleveland Crusaders of the now defunct World Hockey League. Charlie also played with the New York Islander and the Detroit Red Wing organization until the age of 30.

 

Charlie’s coaching experiences include the IHL, where he was hired as an Assistant Coach immediately after his professional playing career ended, Cathedral High School [Indianapolis, IN], and for the last (8) years, he has coached all levels of youth travel  hockey from Mite to AAA.  He currently is the Head Coach of the Checkers AAA 1987 team.

Midget Minor [1988]

Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. A.J. played all minor and Junior A hockey in the Thunder Bay system.  Since earning his degree in Education at Indiana University twelve years ago, A.J. has taught at Park Tudor School. 

 

A.J. coached the Park Tudor Prep hockey team for eleven years winning seven state championships and two Midwest Prep League titles.  He co-directs TNT Hockey Schools with Monty, Rocky and Bryan Trottier.  He also directs summer Hockey Prep In-line camps at Park Tudor School.

 

Currently, he is the Head Coach of the Checkers AAA 1988 team in the Mid American Hockey League.

Head Coach 2002/03 - 1989 AAA Checkers - M.A.H.L -- Founded the Indy Checkers AAA Hockey Club in the year 2000.  Birthplace Toronto Canada - Played in the GTHL Toronto growing up and drafted by the Kitcherner Rangers -- OHL   Played some professional hockey with Indy Checkers (old I.H.L).   Played and coached in Europe. Multiple youth hockey Championships at the AA level over a 5 yr span.  1989 Checker team captured its first AAA Championship at the Shady Side Tourney in 02/03.

Bantam Minor [1990]

Born in Philadelphia, PA., and raised on youth hockey, Mark played on Select AAA team throughout New England area. Drafted as Midget AAA by the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL.   He played for the Seattle Breakers of the WHL, and was the Number 1 overall draft of the QMJHL's Plattsburgh Pioneers.  Draft pick of the NHL's New Jersey Devils, spent time in the IHL, ECHL and 4 years in German Professional Hockey League.

 

Owner and Director of Players Edge National Hockey Schools, Coached New England League Division I Prep School Team -The Hill School.  Over the years has been hired by the NHL and the NHL's Florida Panthers to run "NHL Freeze Play" program for youth hockey players. Selector of Team Florida and Team South youth all - star programs, hired by many youth hockey associations and college programs throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe for skill development and power skating.  Named to USA Hockey's National Instructor Program in 1994. Peewee Major [1991]

John Grainda served as the Checkers AAA 1991 Head Coach for the 2002-03 season. Prior experience includes 9 years of coaching youth hockey teams in three USA Hockey districts - Rocky Mountain, Southeastern and Mid-Am. Since 1994, Grainda has coached Littleton, CO, Knoxville (TN) Cherokees and Indianapolis Racer travel teams at Mite A / AA, Squirt A / AA and Pee Wee AAA levels. As a coach in the Indianapolis Youth Hockey Association,. John has coached winning teams in the Indiana State Squirt A Championship (2000) and Silver Sticks Regional Squirt Champions (2002).

 

As a player, Grainda grew up in Harrisburg , PA and played four years at Penn State University (1977-81) and played in the Hershey, PA Junior B program (1975-77).

Dan began his hockey “career” at age of 6 in Chicagoland area playing at various levels of youth travel hockey - Mite thru Midget with Franklin Park (Ill.) Jets, winning one state championship. He played 4 years of varsity hockey with Leyden High School Eagles and two seasons of Junior Hockey in both the Franklin Park Jets and Northwest Charger organizations.

 

Moved to Indianapolis in 1996 and began a very successful coaching carrier  in the IYHA Hockey Organization from Mini -  Mites to Squirt. Current Head Coach of the Checkers AAA 1992 team.
