Neal DeFevers and
Buckeye Board of Directors
This letter is to bring you and your Board of Directors up to speed on the situation regarding Carbon Monoxide and the Buckeye Tournament at Iceland Sports Complex in Louisville, KY.
First of all I would like to thank Steve Moody and the Buckeye for choosing Iceland as a host site for three divisions of the Buckeye Tournament. As a manager, I can tell you selling additional hours in the month of February is a boost to our revenues. We have hosted your tournament in past years with great success. Iceland is the ideal site for such an event of this magnitude. We have the support from LYHA to volunteer and staff all positions needed to host a great tournament.
The tournament began play on Friday afternoon with games being played all evening with no problem. All games were on time with good competition.
Saturday games began at 7:00 AM and ran the entire day on time with no problems until about 7:50 PM. About that time Dr. Mesersmith and his wife informed me that some players had complained of Headaches, upset Stomach and fatigue. Having seen these types of symptoms related to Carbon Monoxide he said he had a hand held detector for measuring the amount of Carbon Monoxide in the air. As you know this type of gas cannot be seen, felt, tasted, or smelled. He returned to the rink and having completed a walk through we found high readings of Carbon Monoxide in the South rink as well as our concourse. At that point we meet a Cincinnati player coming off the ice in need of his inhaler. This player was having a hard time catching his breath. He was taken directly out side and 911 were called for Fire and EMS. I started evacuating the building immediately before the fire department had arrived. We pulled all Northern KY and Cincinnati players off the ice. The game was called having played only two periods. This was the only game being played at that time.
From this point the entire building was taken over by the Lyndon Fire Department and their staff. We assisted in the remaining stage of the evacuation with giving back all skates to our public session that was going on as well. All players were told not to go into the locker rooms but to go directly outside. Within the next 30 minutes four Cincinnati players were taken to local hospitals for observation. After talking to Dave Johns their head coach later that night he informed me that all players were given oxygen and blood test. All players were released that night.
Over the next two plus hours, Lyndon dispatched a large fan truck to air out the entire building. Also the Louisville Gas and Electric Company was called to cut all gas service to the building. About 10:30 PM the all clear was given with no readings coming up on their detectors. The problem was thought to be an overhead heating unit to keep spectators warm during games.
The tournament resumed Sunday Morning at 8:00 AM. Andrew Rowe from the Environmental Health Specialist for the City of Louisville Health Department
(502-574-6650) Arrived at the rink about 9:00 AM to do an inspection. He to had a hand held Carbon Monoxide Detector. He had readings that were slightly elevated but he informed me that there was no need for alarm. We talked that it was his believe that the Zamboni was causing the higher reading not the heaters.
We played 4 games over the next 2 hours with no problems. About 10:00 AM Cincinnati parents were calling Neal complaining that once again players were having the same type of symptoms as the night before. Neal at that point tried to reach me at the rink to ask about this. Not able to reach me he then called Lyndon about 10:30 AM and asks that they please come back and take additional reading.
Major John Stitch with Lyndon came in with his crew and did find higher readings than Andrew Rowe. The readings at that time were much lower than the night before but still to high to continue play based on we would still need to resurface the ice. He ordered the building be cleared and aired out. At this point we will remain closed until we identify the total problem and have been inspected by all proper agencies.
I won’t sugarcoat the situation; we are committed to providing a first class facility for our customers. We will make whatever repairs and upgrades necessary not only for Buckeye Teams but also for all Teams to fill safe and comfortable in.
Once again I would like to say Thank You for your Business and your continued support.
Sincerely yours,
Chris Richardson
