Congratulations to the DAYTON BLUEHAWK Midget17 "AA" team. They won the Ohio TierII State Championship this past weekend and in doing so they are the first second BTHL team to win an Ohio State Championship! (For those of you interested in history; the first was the Cincinnati PeeWee Cyclones from 1996. Note also that team earned a trip to Nationals with a District and Regional Championship).

I now have the final results for all the brackets but I'm still interested in filling in the gaps. Please send me:
  1. Round robin records with preliminary finish. (Check out the Midget17 bracket for an example).
  2. Semi-final (and Quarter-final if applicable) results with game scores.
You can email me at LenHoltgreven@loadmasterscale.com -or- fax 419/710-3879.

Thanks for your help and please make it a point to wish your fellow BTHL teams,
the Dayton Bluehawk Midgets and the Indy Ice Peewees,
GOOD LUCK AT THE MID-AM DISTRICT TOURNAMENT !!

Carbon Monoxide problem at Iceland in Louisville

On Saturday games were cancelled and the rink shut down due to high levels of carbon monoxide in the South rink. Several players got sick and had to go to the hospital. The Louisville fire department checked the levels and found that they were indeed too high and officially closed down the rink until the problem was fixed. The problem was thought to be a pinhole in the heater above the stands. The rink manager fixed the problem and had the EPA run tests the next morning. The EPA said that the carbon monoxide levels were well within the safe range so the manager allowed the tournament to proceed.

Once again players and fans began to feel ill, so the Louisville fire department was called in to test the levels of carbon monoxide. They found the levels to be too high, so games were cancelled and the rink shut down.

There were complaints by some parents that the rink manager had failed to provide a safe atmosphere for players and fans. That is not the case. He did the best he could with the information he was given. He followed the directions of the EPA and the Louisville fire department. The discrepancy is that the EPA guidelines are not as stringent as the Louisville fire department guidlines. The rink manager did everything he was supposed to do to provide a safe arena for the Buckeye Tournament. He did not intentionally put anyone at risk as some people have inferred.

Congratulations to our 2004 tournament champions and
GOOD LUCK TO ALL in your State Tournaments!

Hotel Information for Dayton - List - Map (555KB file)

02/26/2004 - Mite AA game #5 has been moved back from 4:00pm on Friday to 6:15pm, same rink. This game slot opened up with the elimination of game #15 in the Squirt B bracket. All involved coaches have been notified, this note is for any parents (or other interested parties) that may miss the message from their coach. The players can now enjoy a couple more hours of school on Friday!

02/24/2004 - It's been pointed out to me that there was a minor error in the Squirt B Bracket. As it turns out there is a 3-way tie for 4th place and after applying the tie breaker the correct seeding is:

  1. Northern Kentucky
(Won 3 out of 4 games vs Columbus; Split 2-2 with Athens but won the goal differential 11-10)
  2. Columbus Bluejackets
(Won 3 out of 4 games vs Athens)
  3. Athens Bobcats
The original bracket had Northern Kentucky and Athens reversed (which was clearly a mistake). The change in game times is relatively minor, but potentially much more significant since it's on a Friday evening. Please make a note of it.

02/23/2004 - The brackets are now complete! I'd like to thank everyone for your cooperation in promptly posting results this weekend. Please continue posting your results for the upcoming tournament games, win or lose. As an added note, I will take results from anyone. If you know the score of an unposted game, send me a short note and I'll get it on the website so everyone can see it. Our members will appreciate being able to pull up complete results for all the brackets.

Have a great tournament!

02/18/2004 - As you've probably noticed, the brackets are slowly filling up with seeded teams. This weekend will mark the completion of our regular season and as such will allow us to complete the seeding process. In consideration of unseeded teams making travel plans I'm asking you all to post your scores just as soon as you can this weekend. (It's the responsibility of the home team to report scores but I will ALWAYS take results from anyone in the know!) Keep in mind that your team may already be seeded but the outcome of your games could very well determine the final placement of other teams in your division. I will make it a point to update the website at least a couple of times over the weekend so those of you still waiting for your final assignment can check the website periodically. PLEASE HELP US OUT HERE!

01/20/2004 - The schedule has been posted. Actual teams will be plugged in as they become locked in the standings. Continue to monitor this site for any updates or announcements.

01/16/2004 - We've been getting a number of inquiries about the year-end tournament. Please watch the website, all information will be posted here just as soon as it becomes final. For now, what we can tell you is that it will be held the last weekend of February (as announced at the scheduling meeting) and most of the divisions will again be in Cincinnati. With the dramatic growth of the league combined with our effort to minimize lost school/work time we will be forced to move some of the divisions to surrounding areas. Right now we're looking at Dayton and possibly Louisville.

Brackets have been posted since September and you'll find a link at the bottom of each division on the Standings page. Game times, locations and teams will be plugged in as the schedule is finalized and teams become mathematically locked in the standings.

Team Seeding

I'm getting a number of inquiries about the Team Seeding process. Please note there is a "Team Seeding" link at the bottom of each bracket (and now included above) which explains the process in detail. If you read the notes in the document you'll understand that teams are seeded in a manner which guarantees a "cross-divisional" matchup in the first round. In addition, as long as top seeded teams win throughout the tournament, semi-final games will consist of the 1st place team from each division vs. the 2nd place team from the other. The final would then include the 2 divisional champs.

That's the logic behind the design but as we all know, there will be upsets and not all finals will include division champs. There seems to be a lot of interest in the tournament right now and I'm sure it's going to be a very competitive event. Good luck to all and have a good time!

** League Standings Tie Breaker **

Posted: 01/19/2004

The following tie breaker will be used in the case of a tie in points for regular season standings (same as last 5 years):

  1. Results of Head-to-Head Series between tied teams.
  2. Goal Differential (Goals For minus Goals Against) in games between tied teams.
  3. Goals Against in games between tied teams.
  4. Goal Differential in all league games.
  5. Goals Against in all league games.
  6. If still tied then declare co-champions. (Coin flip will be used for tournament seeding).

Louisville family in need

Louisville Youth Hockey Association has had a tragedy within its members. One of our families has had a fire and lost everything this Holiday Season. We as a hockey family have come together to help provide for them. Our thoughts were that there may be other hockey families that may want to help the Family as while. If you are playing in Louisville the weekend of 12/6-7/03 you will find fund raising activities going on to support the family. Please help them out.

If you are not playing in Louisville this weekend you can still help. A fund has been set up for financial donations at St. John United Methodist Church Address the envelope to: Spencer Family Fund c/o St, John United Methodist Church, 12700 West Hwy 42, Prospect, KY 40059, Make check payable to St John United Methodist c/o Spencer Family.

LYHA thanks you for any help you could give in this hard time.

LETS ALL PULL TOGETHER TO HELP ONE OF OUR HOCKEY FAMILY.

Reminder to Scorekeepers

As a minor official, it is the scorekeepers responsibility to notify the Referees just as soon as a player has 5 penalties and/or the coach if the team has a total of 15. A game misconduct is automatic in this event and is to be recorded on the scoresheet at the time of occurrence. If after the game a team has 15 or more penalties, the coach will receive a game misconduct and be suspended for the next game.

Stew Erisman, Conduct Committee Chair

----

As an added note, it's important to accurately count penalties. Common errors occur in the following situations:

  • Double minors. There is no such thing as a 4 minute penalty, this is actually 2 penalties and should be recorded on 2 seperate lines.
  • A 2-and-10 for things like checking from behind is also 2 penalties. This should be recorded as a 2 minute minor and 10 minute misconduct.
  • Likewise for a 5 minute major combined with a game misconduct. This is recorded as 2 penalties and could potentially result in an additional game misconduct if it causes the player to then exceed the 5 penalty limit.

Problem with Password Request link

For those of you that have not yet submitted a request for a Password, there should be a link to the Request form located on the Password Entry screen. For some reason this link does not appear for some people. I'm guessing it's browser related (old version or whatever). If you need a password and there is no link on the Password screen, use this link. Be sure to select the correct team, fill in all the fields and submit it.
